Welcome

Welcome to the Mogadishu Orphanage. The events of the civil war and following unrest in Somalia has left us concerned about the young and innocent whose families have been damaged. Shamis Elmi has developed a non-profit organisation to aid orphaned children and young adults by providing them with housing and a good education.

Our Mission

We believe that the road to start helping and rebuilding Somalia begins with self-help. We the Somali diaspora have lot to offer but we can't achieve our full potential without the help of the central government, local government and UNSOM. In this case, Shamis was lucky - or shall we say the children that she cares for were lucky, because her husband was the Mayor of Mogadishu and had a strong belief of giving orphaned children the right education. Shamis has helped the orphans by starting them on the right path in the hope that they will, upon return to their former societies they came from; free from clan immaturity.

Shamis used to work with "Sure Start" - she has put the skills she aquired from caring for young children and their parents to use with the orphans of Mogadishu.

Donation

Apart from the initial help the orphanage received from the former mayor Mohamud Ahmed Tarzan, Hormud Company (who paid for the beds) and Shamis's diaspora friends, the orphanage has received no other help to date.

All donations are welcome:

Our Opening Ceremony

This week saw the opening day of our new home. The orphanage is a combined residential home and schooling for day visitors. We have 55 young orphans between the ages of 7 to 9 years old. These children are permanent residents and an additional 30 children attend the orphanage daily for education.

Dinner time and mainly lunch time is a busy time for the staff; children have to be taught table manners and discipline. The first week was difficult but soon the young ones were able to follow a daily routine.

Staff management is a challenging task. The staff have never dealt with orphans who need, as they put it, "being pampered" and so the adults have to be taught to provide care and tenderness towards the children. We have teachers, dinner ladies and watch guards; all working a rotational shift.
